Abstract: The formal structures we encounter in musical compositions emerge not from arbitrary creative choices, but from the fundamental patterns of human lived experience. Electroacoustic music presents a unique challenge to traditional structural analysis, as it prioritizes the transformation and manipulation of sound itself rather than the conventional language of notes, pitches, and harmonic relationships. This lecture examines several of the human experiences that underlie alternative conceptualizations of musical structure. I will focus on two interconnected ideas central to my compositional practice: musical journey—a trajectory with clear origins, pathways, and destinations that unfold across foreground, middleground, and background layers of perception—and musical uncertainty—the generative force that creates and sustains tension throughout a work. Through original examples created for this presentation alongside examples from existing electroacoustic works, I will explore how these concepts manifest and function as structural principles.
